Calculate the optimal length for equal pieces when cutting material, accounting for saw blade kerf to minimize waste.
How to Use
- Choose your preferred unit (millimeters or inches)
- Enter the total length of your material
- Enter your saw blade's kerf width
- Select your desired granularity (for inches) - this determines the smallest unit of measurement
- Select your desired number of pieces from the results table
- Set up your stop block at the calculated piece length
- Make your cuts - the remaining material should be just enough for the final piece
Example
Let's say you have a 96-inch board and want to cut it into 4 equal pieces using a saw with a 1/8-inch kerf:
- Select "Inches" as your unit
- Enter "96" for the total length
- Enter "0.125" or "1/8" for the kerf width
- Select "1/8 inch" for granularity (this means measurements will be rounded to the nearest 1/8 inch)
- The calculator will show you that each piece should be 23 7/8 inches
- Set your stop block to 23 7/8 inches
- After making 3 cuts, you'll have 4 equal pieces with minimal waste
Note: Choosing a smaller granularity (like 1/64 inch) will give you more precise measurements but may result in more complex fractions. A larger granularity (like 1/2 inch) will give you simpler measurements but might result in slightly more waste.
